Birthplace of Pope Paul VI

Discover the home of Pope Paul VI!

On 15 August 1997, during the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary,  Vittorio Montini, Paul VI’s cousin, died suddenly in Concesio at the age of 88. With a testamentary bequest, he left the house in Concesio and the adjacent area, owned by him, and where Giovanni Battista Montini was born on 26 September 1897, to the Opera per l’Educazione Cristiana di Brescia, promoter of the Paul VI Institute. Vittorio Montini had always carefully and thoughtfully looked after the building that had become a family memory and now also the patrimony of the universal church. It is a large property purchased in  1863 by the Montini family, with a hybrid architecture characterised by elegant and robust 17th-century lines, surrounded by an extensive garden which is home to the Paul VI Institute. The house has become a pilgrimage destination and belongs to the Paul VI Institute. Next to it is the home of a Religious Community of the Daughters of Mary Help of Christians (Salesian Sisters of Don Bosco) with the task of guarding the religious dimension of the dwelling and assisting in the activities of the Paul VI Institute by welcoming visitors, and teaching them about the authority and magisterium of Pope Montini. The house can be visited individually or in small groups by contacting the Secretariat of the Paul VI Institute Study Centre.
